Padrão (replica)
The Padrão de Santo Agostinho is a landmark erected in Angola, along the Atlantic coast, in the area of Morro de Santo Agostinho, in the south of Namibe province. It is one of the many “standards” placed by Portuguese navigators during the 15th and 16th centuries to mark their presence and occupation of colonized territories.
It is a stone column (usually in the shape of a cross or pillar), often topped by an armillary sphere or the cross of Christ, symbolizing the imposition of Christianity and European culture on the local populations.
The pattern is therefore a symbol of the Portuguese colonial presence in Africa and America, with all its implications - from maritime and religious expansion to economic exploitation and cultural domination through colonialism.
