Cover of the twelfth issue of the Boletim da Sociedade Luso-Africana do Rio de Janeiro, edited and published between 1930 and 1939. The periodical had 20 volumes published and was the only organ dedicated exclusively to colonial propaganda in Brazil. Over the course of its publication, it is possible to observe changes in the editorial record, confronting the hegemonic discourse, since it was run by republicans who opposed the Salazar regime and had the support of various republican correspondents from all the colonies of the time, namely Angola and Mozambique.

This type of editorial propaganda for the Estado Novo was particularly common during the 1920s and 30s, seeking to extol the strength of the Portuguese ‘empire’ and its Luso-tropicalist character, set in a colonial and racist context.

The illustration on the cover of this issue of the bulletin uses elements from the coat of arms of the Portuguese national flag, emphasising Portugal's close identity link with its colonial history.
