El-Rei Fountain (Painting)
Painting of the Chafariz d'El-Rei, in Lisbon's Alfama neighbourhood, by an unknown Flemish author.
The painting reveals scenes of everyday life in Lisbon, a port city with connections to the world, but it also reveals the undeniable presence of black people in Portugal, in different classes and occupying different social roles. You can see a black person on a horse, proving that class advancement was possible, albeit rare, others with musical instruments, others enslaved, etc? The picture shows the ethnic and cultural diversity that already existed in Portugal in the 16th century and whose presence is strategically and deliberately erased today.
