Toothpick Holder Elephant
Decorative and souvenir ceramic pieces from the 1934 Porto Colonial Exhibition, found for sale on an online auction website.
The elephant, a ‘commemorative mascot’ and as an ‘exotic’ animal in the eyes of the coloniser, became a symbol of the ‘Colonial Empire’ and can be found in various formats and graphic representations in different contexts.
The use of the fauna and flora of the colonised territories in colonial images is part of the creation of a fictionalised, romanticised and exoticised imaginary of these territories and all life in them.
