Adamastor Monument
Work by Júlio Vaz Júnior, inaugurated in 1927 at the Santa Catarina viewpoint, Lisbon, Portugal. It represents the mythological figure of Adamastor, the sea monster who confronts the navigators in the epic ‘Os Lusíadas’.
An example of the presence of the ‘discoveries’ narrative in the public space, consolidating the myth of the colonising hero and colonial invasions as a major part of national identity.
