Dum Diversas
In 1452, Pope Nicholas v signed a papal bull called ‘dum diversas’, addressed to King Afonso V of Portugal, granting Portugal rights to invade territories and capture enslaved populations in West Africa
The bull read as follows:
‘(...) we grant by these present documents, with our Apostolic Authority, full and free permission to invade, seek out, capture and subjugate Saracens and pagans and other infidels and enemies of Christ wherever they may be found, as well as their kingdoms, duchies, counties, principalities, and other possessions [...] and to reduce their people to perpetual slavery.’
From this moment on, faith would be the main argument for transatlantic trafficking, the enslavement of African peoples, the acculturation and extermination of indigenous peoples and the fight against anything that challenged Patriarchy.
