Racist Statues
Racist statues continue to adorn the gardens of Portugal dos Pequenitos in Coimbra - a theme park built in 1940 by the Estado Novo.
With its architecture designed for children, the park replicates various types of housing and cultural aspects of Portugal through various themed areas, according to the park's website. One of these themed areas is called ‘Portugal and the world’ and refers to the part of the park where the territories and culture of the territories colonised by Portugal are represented.
This photo was taken in that area of the park, where you can find several statues like these, as well as other original museum objects from these territories.
The park remains open to the public, preserving the colonial narrative of the time in which it was created, since there is no historical contextualisation of its context or historical reparations in the light of contemporaneity, such as the return of pieces to their territories of origin.
