Filipa de Lencastre in the Monument to the "Discoveries"
The only female figure present in the pattern of the “discoveries” is Filipa de Lencastre, remembered as the “Mother of Prince Henry the Navigator”.
She is depicted as a mother and wife, a diplomat, an educator and, above all, as the protective figure of the Portuguese hero, the Infante who began the colonial navigations - the most important Portuguese achievement in the eyes of the Estado Novo.
The presence of the female figure in the patriarchal monument, and on board the great ship commemorating the colonial effort, is only allowed to reinforce the aspects that were supposed to constitute women in the society of the time: docile, submissive and in favor of the State's colonial narrative.
