Illustrated cover of O Século : supplement dedicated to the Portuguese Colonial Empire and the commemorations in the Overseas Provinces of the centenary of the foundation and restoration of Portugal", in an issue commemorating the centenary, where the standard and the caravel are once again the central elements of the epic narrative of the colonial invasions.

The proportion of the standard and its shadow that covers the world is intended to overwhelm the importance of Portugal in history, through its colonial achievements.

The captioned banner reads an excerpt from Luís Vaz de Camões' ‘Os Lusíadas’, the most representative text of the Portuguese colonial and imperialist narrative built up and maintained over the centuries. This reference to the great imperialist epic can be found in other historical images, such as the façade of the ‘Pavilhão do Mundo Português’ (Portuguese World Pavilion) during the Portuguese World Exhibition in Lisbon in 1940, as well as on a wall map in the colonial section of the ‘Portugal dos Pequenitos’ park in Coimbra.
