My History of the Discovery Age
School support book cover. Both the narrative of the image chosen for the cover and the description given of the book's contents treat the colonial invasions of the 16th century from an epic point of view, using the word ‘discoveries’ and praising the invasion and the centuries of imperial colonialism as a heroic Portuguese feat, ignoring and, consequently, actively silencing the violence exercised in the expropriation of territories on the African, American and Asian continents, the transatlantic traffic and the oppression of the original peoples of these territories.
This narrative is generally justified by historians through the argument that history must be told taking into account the social, political and economic context of the time studied - arguing that the idea of ‘discovery’ was the prevailing one.
However, through historical anachronism, it is possible to counter-argue that other points of view of history do not cease to exist, particularly those of the peoples who were colonised and whose stories of resistance were rendered invisible by the holders of the tools and institutions that legitimise ‘History’ with a big H - the colonisers.
