There are dozens of sculptures like this one that can still be found on different building façades in Lisbon, especially in the old parts of the city. They are a reference to the period of colonial navigations, but also to the barge of St Vincent, which is the symbol of the city.

Over the decades, the representation of the barge has changed and become closer to the caravel. These sculptural landmarks signalled entry into the city's territory and jurisdiction, but also ownership of the building.
