Companhia do Niassa was a Portuguese state-owned letter company formed in 1981 with the aim of administering part of the territory of Mozambique when it was still colonised by Portugal.

The stamps, graphic objects that travelled all over the world, began by depicting figures of ‘exotic’ animals in the eyes of the European coloniser. Later, when the monarchy was ousted and the republic established, changes were made to the stamps to denote this change of power. The last stamps produced already contained another type of colonial imagery - the caravel, the effigy of Vasco da Gama, among others.

The caravel can be found in colonial representations from the time of the invasions to the present day, demonstrating its weight as a powerful image in the Portuguese imperialist narrative.
